Sources: Newcastle set sights on signing A-list star as PiF green light January deal

Newcastle United have made it a priority to sign a wide forward in January, sources have told Football Insider.

The north-east giants are in the market for an A-list attacker who can play out wide, most likely on the left flank, and provide a consistent goal threat.

One target is Shakhtar Donetsk sensation Mykhaylo Mudryk, with Newcastle scouts watching his latest eye-catching display on Tuesday night.

The 21-year-old scored a wonder goal to keep his team in contention for the Champions League knockout stages.

Newcastle are among many clubs interested in Mudryk and are shortlisting other potential attacking targets.

The club owners PiF have given the green light to spend in January but there will not be a repeat of their extensive recruitment of the winter window earlier this year.

Allan Saint-Maximin has occupied the role on the left of Newcastle’s attack ever since he joined the club in the summer of 2019.

However, he has only been able to make five appearances this season due to a recurring hamstring injury.

Club-record signing Alexander Isak has also been limited to just three appearances after picking up a knock during October’s international break.

Newcastle have continued to improve without Saint-Maximin and Isak as they currently sit fourth in the Premier League.

Miguel Almiron has stepped up in front of goal and has already scored six this season, his best-ever return for a single campaign with the club.

Last January, Newcastle signed Kieran Trippier, Chris Wood, Bruno Guimaraes, Dan Burn and Matt Targett.

The club went from relegation candidates to almost finishing in the top half, eventually finishing the season 11th.
