Sources: Newcastle United set sights on surprise late swoop for Morgan Gibbs-White

Newcastle United are closely monitoring Nottingham Forest ace Morgan Gibbs-White for a January move, sources have told Football Insider.

Speaking to the new edition of Football Insider’s Inside Track Podcast, transfer correspondent Pete O’Rourke revealed that if the Magpies boost their budget this month, including the expected sale of Miguel Almiron, they could make a move for the 23-year-old.

It is believed that Forest will be reluctant to sell the versatile attacker, meaning Eddie Howe’s side would have to fork out a significant fee to prise him to St James’ Park.

As revealed by Football Insider (24 January), the club remain locked in advanced talks with Saudi Pro League side Al-Shabab about a fee for Almiron, with a deal believed to be “very close”.

Kieran Trippier had been interested in joining Bayern Munich after they submitted three offers but the Bundesliga giants have confirmed they are no longer pursuing him.

Gibbs-White has impressed in the Premier League since his reported £35million move to the City Ground in the summer of 2022.

He has bagged three goals and three assists across 22 appearances in a Forest side that are slipping into a relegation battle and facing a potential points deduction after being charged with breaching Profitability and Sustainability Rules.

The Magpies are conscious of abiding by their FFP obligations, meaning they will have to sell players before bringing in new recruits.

Well-placed sources revealed to Football Insider (23 January) that they would demand a £20million package to sell Atletico Madrid and AC Milan target Callum Wilson.
