Sources: Portsmouth in talks with Millwall to sign Ferguson

Portsmouth are in talks with Millwall over signing Shane Ferguson, Football Insider understands.

The 29-year-old winger has started just two Championship games for Millwall this season.

A recruitment source has told Football Insider Portsmouth want to bring the Northern Ireland international on loan until the end of the season.

His Millwall contract expires at the end of the season meaning a potential loan move may mean he has played his last game for the club.

Ferguson moved to the New Den in August 2015, initially on loan from Newcastle United, and signed permanently for the club the following January.

The Derry-born ace played over 30 times for Newcastle including 23 appearances in the Premier League.

The versatile winger helped Millwall achieve promotion via the League One play-offs in the 2016/17 season.

He has played over 200 times for Millwall but has fallen down the pecking order this season.

Portsmouth are hoping to earn promotion from League One this season and currently sit in fifth position despite losing their last two games.

Manager Kenny Jackett has already bolstered his ranks this month with the permanent addition of Charlie Daniels while George Byers and Harvey White have joined on loan.

EFL clubs are allowed five loan players in matchday squads meaning Portsmouth have one free space they can use.

Ferguson, a 42-time Northern Ireland international, could fill that spot and is able to operate on the wing and at left full-back.

In other news, Gillingham have rejected multiple approaches from Charlton Athletic to sign a 25-year-old.
