Sources: Rangers delay Andreas Skov Olsen talks amid new concerns

Rangers are uncertain about triggering the £8million option-to-buy in Andreas Skov Olsen’s loan deal from Wolfsburg.

Skov Olsen has struggled to hit top form since joining the Gers from Wolfsburg in the January transfer window.

He has scored once and provided two assists in eight appearances for the club so far as they battle for the Scottish Premiership title with Celtic and Hearts.

As I revealed on the latest edition of Football Insider’s Transfer Insider podcast, Rangers are still undecided over signing the Denmark international on a permanent basis this summer.

Rangers’ transfer plans are taking a backseat for now as Danny Rohl focuses on delivering silverware to the Ibrox club in the next few months.

Rangers are yet to be convinced to sign Andreas Skov Olsen

Olsen has 40 caps for his country and has played regularly in Serie A, the Belgian Pro League and the Bundesliga, but is yet to prove his quality in the Scottish Premiership.

He has started each of Rangers’ last four matches, but needs to do more to earn a permanent move to the club in the summer.

Speaking on the Transfer Insider podcast, I explained: “He came with a lot of fanfare following his January arrival. He was a big signing for Rangers when they got him on loan from Wolfsburg with an option to buy for around £8 million.

“It’s a big fee for Rangers to pay for him if they do want to make that move a permanent deal. He has struggled, there is no getting away from that, with one goal and two assists in eight appearances.

“It’s been difficult for him. He’s maybe not fully up to speed after an up-and-down half-season at Wolfsburg. He had injuries and he wasn’t playing there.

“He’s a talented player, there’s no doubts about it, but Rangers will be wary of spending that big fee on him if he’s not improving in his performances and having a big impact between now and the end of the season.”

Rangers want to offer James Tavernier a new contract

One player who does look set to still be at Rangers next season is club captain Tavernier, who recently surpassed 550 appearances for the Ibrox side.

He is close to completing 11 years at the club, but is out of contract this summer and his future remains up in the air as it stands.

Despite the uncertainty, sources have told Football Insider that Rangers are open to handing Tavernier a new contract ahead of its expiration date.

He has continued to be a regular for the Gers this season, with 12 goals and seven assists in 45 games so far this term.
