Sources: Rangers make approach to sign Luke Thomas after Leicester City twist

Rangers have approached Leicester City to bring left-back Luke Thomas in on loan this month, sources have told Football Insider.

Speaking to the new edition of Football Insider’s Insider Track Podcast, transfer correspondent Pete O’Rourke revealed that a second loan for the 22-year-old could be sanctioned by the Foxes after his spell at Premier League side Sheffield United was cut short.

Philippe Clement’s side are keen to sign Thomas, with left-back being their priority position this month.

Well-placed sources told Football Insider that the deal will likely be a six-month loan with no option to buy at the end of the season.

It is believed that a fee to bring Thomas to Ibrox permanently would be too expensive for the Gers in the summer.

Thomas made 13 appearances for Sheffield United in the first half of the season but had his spell terminated by mutual consent due to a lack of game time.

He featured just once in the Blades’ last six league games, but Leicester are willing to let him depart temporarily again as he does not feature in manager Enzo Maresca’s plans this season.

The Englishman has a wealth of top-flight experience having played 68 games in the Premier League.

The Gers are very keen to bring in a new left-back this month with the futures of Ridvan Yilmaz and Borna Barisic in doubt.

Sources told Football Insider (20 January) that the club will sell Yilmaz this month if they receive an offer between £3-4million.
