Sources: Russell Martin puts a block on Rangers January spending

Rangers are looking to banish the demons of the Russell Martin regime following the appointment of Danny Rohl.

The debacle of Martin‘s brief tenure pushed Rangers to bring in Rohl as the new manager following a successful spell at Sheffield Wednesday.

The appointment has split opinions with Premier League legend Matt Le Tissier exclusively telling Football Insider that Rangers should’ve brought in Ole Gunnar Solskjaer instead of Rohl.

Given the mounting pressure on the hierarchy, Aberdeen’s former chief Keith Wyness exclusively told Football Insider that Rangers will not give Rohl much time to turn things around, sparking doubts over January spending if he underperforms.

Rangers unlikely to spend big in January after hefty summer spend

As I revealed on the latest edition of Football Insider’s Inside Track podcast, the Gers went large in the last transfer window which could leave them cash-strapped in January.

Moreover, Rangers crashed to a 3-0 defeat against Brann on 23 October in the Europa League in the German’s first game in-charge.

Likely to be cautious after his predecessor’s poor spell at the club, the board will be more tentative about backing the ex-Sheffield Wednesday boss straight away with results needing to drastically improve.

Speaking on the Inside Track podcast, I explained: “The 49ers group at Rangers would love to back Danny Rohl, but they did have a big summer. Let’s not forget about that.

“They had a £20million net spend and brought in a number of new signings for Russell Martin and a lot of them failed to impress.

“So I don’t think there’s a lot of money left in the transfer coffers for Danny Rohl. And I’m sure he’s well aware of that.

“I don’t think he’d be expecting huge transfer funds to be made available for him January.”

Rohl to make Nicolas Raskin his go-to man as Rangers aim to deflect prying eyes

One of the key questions for Rohl is who he builds the team around at Rangers ahead of a critical starting period at the club.

The midfield appears to be the key to how the German wants to play with emphasis on versatile and agile players to enact his philosophy.

Sources told Football Insider that Tottenham are interested in signing Nicolas Raskin as the new boss decides on where he envisions the number 43 in his plans.

The Belgian was exiled by Martin but now has an incredible opportunity to prove himself to the new boss and show commitment by staying in Glasgow.
