Sources: Sheffield United deal for Nottingham Forest star Joe Worrall collapses after late U-turn – new arrival lined up

Joe Worrall’s move to Sheffield United has collapsed after the club made a U-turn on their transfer plans, sources have told Football Insider.

The Blades had struck an agreement with Nottingham Forest to sign the 27-year-old defender on a loan deal until the end of the 2023-24 season.

Worrall was on his way to Sheffield to complete a medical and sign off on the deal, but it is understood that the agreement has now collapsed.

Sheffield United have pulled out of the deal after a decision was made to instead sign Everton defender Mason Holgate.

As revealed by Football Insider earlier on Thursday (1 February), the Blades were in advanced talks with Everton to sign Holgate.

Holgate is currently on loan at Championship side Southampton, but Everton are set to terminate his current deal before allowing the defender to join Sheffield United.

He has struggled to break into the first-team plans at Southampton this season having made just seven appearances across all competitions.

Holgate is now set to make a return to Premier League action after falling down the pecking order at Everton under Sean Dyche.

United boss Chris Wilder was eager to bolster his side’s defensive department before Thursday’s deadline and Holgate is now their main priority.
