Sources: Shrewsbury Town agree to sign Preston North End star Tom Bayliss

Shrewsbury Town have agreed a deal with Preston North End midfielder Tom Bayliss, Football Insider understands.

The 23-year-old was on the transfer list at Deepdale after struggling to make an impact since his arrival from Coventry City.

A Shrewsbury source has told Football Insider that manager Steve Cotterill is a big fan of Bayliss and has moved quickly to land the midfielder in a permanent deal.

Bayliss struggled to break into the Preston side under former boss Alex Neil and was then loaned out to Wigan Athletic last season.

He struggled to play regularly in the Wigan side that won the League One title in 2021-22.

Leam Richardson preferred Tom Naylor and Jordan Cousins at the base of his midfield and Bayliss managed just six starts in the league.

Across all competitions, he featured in 17 games for the Latics.

At Preston, he still has a year left on his contract but Ryan Lowe is well-stocked in midfield so is willing to let him go.

Lowe has Alan Browne, Ali McCann, Daniel Johnson, Ryan Ledson, Ben Whiteman and Brad Potts who are all capable of playing a similar role to Bayliss.

He looks set to end his North End career with 21 appearances across all competitions, scoring one goal.

Shrewsbury finished down in 18th in League One in 2021-22, 10 points above the relegation zone.

Cotterill has already added Bayliss’ former Coventry teammate Jordan Shipley to the squad ahead of the 2022-23 campaign.

In other news, Preston North End and Sunderland are in a race to sign a big name after a new twist.
