Sources: Tottenham to appoint Ryan Mason as permanent manager plan revealed

Tottenham are set to appoint Ryan Mason as caretaker manager while they continue plans to secure a permanent replacement for Antonio Conte, sources have told Football Insider.

The North London club are expected to sack Conte imminently when pay-off details have been finalised and have highlighted his 31-year-old assistant as the ideal candidate to take temporary charge of the side.

Mason will be tasked with finishing the 2022-23 campaign with Spurs, ahead of the club appointing a new manager in the summer.

Football Insider sources revealed on Friday that recently-sacked Bayern Munich boss Julian Nagelsmann has now been made Tottenham’s first-choice candidate to replace Conte.

It is understood that Mason will push to be part of the backroom staff at Tottenham under next season’s new manager, with the former midfielder keen to continue his coaching career at the club.

Mason has previously taken caretaker charge of Tottenham in 2021 following the sacking of Jose Mourinho.

He became the Premier League’s youngest-ever manager in the process aged 29, and won his first match in charge against Southampton.

Mason was then tasked with taking Spurs to Wembley to face Man City, where he saw his side lose 1-0.

Mason was kept at the club by Nuno Espirito Santo, but removed from first-team duties. Conte reinstated him as a first-team coach in November 2021 after being impressed by his work on the training pitch.

Overall, Mason’s time as a caretaker ended with a 57.1 per cent win rate, with four wins in his seven matches in charge.
