Sources: West Ham and Wolves set sights on signing Emiliano Martinez
West Ham and Wolves are among a number of English clubs plotting moves for Uruguay midfielder Emiliano Martínez, sources have told Football Insider.
The FC Midtjylland ace, 23, has been earning rave reviews since moving to the Danish club in January from Brazilian club Red Bull Bragantino.
Martinez’s agent, Luis Ferrer, who was instrumental in Kylian Mbappe’s move to Paris Saint Germain, has been fielding interest from clubs across Europe for the midfield dynamo.
They include Premier League duo West Ham and Wolves, who have both expressed an interest in a potential deal.
Martinez has impressed new Uruguay boss Marcelo Bielsa and recently won his first call-up to the national side.
He figured in Bielsa’s first two games in charge last month against Nicaragua and Cuba, and the former Leeds United manager sees the defensive midfielder becoming a mainstay in the national team going forward.
Martinez joined Midtjylland on an initial loan deal which became a permanent move at the beginning of the January transfer window.
He managed 33 outings across all competitions for the Danish side – including six starts in the Europa League – and scored one goal.
The midfielder’s contract at the MCH Arena is set to run until June 2027.
Martinez managed to bounce back in the 2022-23 campaign after a serious Achilles tendon injury kept him out of the entire 2021-22 season with Bragantino.
West Ham are in the market for midfield reinforcements after raking in a British-record fee for the sale of captain Declan Rice to Arsenal this month.
Football Insider revealed earlier this month (2 July) that the Irons want to add two midfielders in the remainder of the summer window.
Meanwhile, Wolves have also lost their captain in the off-season – with Ruben Neves joining Saudi club Al-Hilal for a reported £47million.
