Sources: Newcastle well placed to agree Conor Gallagher deal after ‘huge’ news

Newcastle United’s interest in signing Chelsea star Conor Gallagher has not diminished ahead of the summer window, sources have told Football Insider.

The Magpies were interested in signing Gallagher, 23, during the January window but talks or a bid didn’t materialise before the deadline.

Sources told this site on 6 February that the England international could have sealed a move to St James’ Park if Chelsea’s British-record deal for Enzo Fernandez went through earlier in the window.

It is believed that a summer deal is now possible for Newcastle – with the Blues likely to ask for a fee of around £30million for Gallagher.

The Magpies could also look to a loan-to-buy deal for the midfield star – who is wanted by Crystal Palace and a host of other Premier League sides.

Newcastle have been stretched thin in midfield following Bruno Guimaraes’ red card in the League Cup semi-final.

Guimaraes has missed the last three Premier League games but will return for the cup final against Man United on Sunday (26 February).

Eddie Howe’s side also offloaded long-serving Jonjo Shelvey to Nottingham Forest in the final throes of the winter window.

Joelinton, Joe Willock, and Sean Longstaff have anchored the midfield in recent weeks – with Newcastle without a Premier League win in four games.

Gallagher has been reduced to a substitute role in Chelsea’s last two league outings as Fernandez settles into his new surroundings.

The former Crystal Palace loanee, who is under contract until 2025, has started in just 12 of his 28 appearances for the London giants this season.

Football Insider revealed earlier this month (13 February) that Newcastle have set aside “huge” funds as they target a partner for Guimaraes this summer.

The Magpies could also have potential Champions League football to offer any new signings, with qualification still in their hands with 15 games to play.
