Southampton are poised to announce the signing of Mohammed Salisu from Real Valladolid after reaching a full agreement over the transfer.
The Premier League club have agreed to pay the £10.9m (€12m) release clause in the Ghanian centre-back’s contract as well as hand him a four-year deal worth £35,000-a-year.
A Southampton contract has told Football Insider that the deal is in place and an announcement should follow shortly.
He cannot be formally registered until a work permit is obtained but the Saints believe that to be a formality.
Salisu is a left-footed centre-back who stands at 6ft 3ins and has been a mainstay of the Valladolid team this season.
He started 30 of their 38 La Liga matches after graduating from their B team.
Salisu has made it clear to the Spanish side he wants to play in the Premier League with Southampton, who have worked quickly to meet his release clause.
This comes after manager Ralph Hasenhuttl prioritised strengthening his side’s central defence this summer.
Hasenhuttl’s side have conceded 59 goals in their 37 league matches, and have moved to rectify that ahead of the official opening of the window next week.
Nevertheless, Southampton have been impressive either side of the lockdown and are 12th in the Premier League table heading into their final match on Sunday.
In other Southampton news, a Liverpool big name has been backed to sign for the Saints.
