Andy Robertson transfer from Liverpool could still happen in January, his likely destination revealed

Atletico Madrid have not given up hope of signing summer target Andy Robertson from Liverpool in the January transfer window.

The two clubs faced each other in the Champions League as the Reds triumphed 3-2 with the Atletico Madrid staff involved in an altercation with Liverpool fans.

Sources told Football Insider on 16 September that Arne Slot will rotate Liverpool left-backs Milos Kerkez and Robertson across the season which saw the Scotsman start in the European tie on 17 September.

As I revealed on the latest edition of Football Insider’s Inside Track podcast, the Premier League champions are contemplating over what to do with the number 26 after his contract entered into the final year.

The Spanish side were linked to the Scotland international last summer and were reminded of his ability in their away day defeat during the midweek.

Andy Robertson Liverpool uncertainty opens door for Atletico Madrid

Football Insider exclusively revealed back in June that Robertson was considering a move to Atletico Madrid, according to former Man United and Blackburn chief scout Mick Brown.

The 31-year-old had become second-choice following the arrival of the Hungarian full-back which prompted a dramatic push for a transfer to the Spanish capital.

Yet, the former Hull City defender has been a “world-class” player at Liverpool for eight whole seasons (Stadium Astro) with new additions at Atletico Madrid signifying an exit from Anfield could be unlikely.

Speaking on the Inside Track podcast, I explained: “Look, I don’t see Atletico Madrid coming back in for Robertson in January.

“They’ve signed Matteo Ruggeri from Atalanta in the summer. So, they have Javi Galan at left-back as well.

“So, I don’t imagine they’ll be in the market for Robertson in January. But look, if he doesn’t sign a new contract soon, he can speak to interested foreign clubs in January and then possibly leave on a free transfer.

“But I’m sure Liverpool right now won’t want to lose Robertson as I still feel he’s got a role to play at Anfield.”

Andy Robertson new contract at Liverpool would eliminate Atletico Madrid rumours

Sources told Football Insider on 19 September that Liverpool are considering a new contract for Robertson.

Hopes had been placed on the inexperienced shoulders of Kerkez who hasn’t found his feet yet at Anfield.

Doubts over the early development of the Hungarian has seen the Dutch manager revert to his trusty veteran left-back who could nail down a starting spot moving forward.

If the Reds push on with a contract extension for the 31-year-old then Atletico Madrid will likely be put off making advances for Robertson in the January or summer 2026 transfer window.

Diego Simeone already has strong depth in his left-back position and splashing the cash on a third option would be a poor bit of business instead of waiting for the Scotland international to become a free agent.
