Stan Collymore aims a dig at Birmingham, Aston Villa fans will love his comments
By Amir Mir
Former Aston Villa striker Stan Collymore has aimed a dig at Birmingham by stating that manager Gianfranco Zola is “doing a great job” at the club.
The Italian took charge of the Midlands side in mid-December after the surprising sacking of Gary Rowett who at the time had taken the side to within touching distance of the top six.
However, since Zola’s arrival, the Blues have failed to win in his nine matches in charge, including losing 2-0 to Norwich on Saturday.
Zola’s side are currently one point and one place above their rivals Villa in the Championship table, but his team do have a game in hand.
This was Collymore’s dig at Birmingham which Villa’s fans will love because their rivals have fallen from possible promotion chasers under Rowett to failing to win in nine games under his replacement.
“Zola is doing a great job at Blues,” said Collymore, as posted on his personal Twitter account. “Might finish above them after all this season.”
Birmingham have recorded 37 points from their 28 league games this season, while Villa have 36 points from 27 games.
The duo met earlier on in the campaign at St. Andrews when Steve Bruce’s side picked up a point thanks to Gary Gardner’s headed goal.
They will next meet on April 23 at Villa Park where the Championship season will be coming to a close and both sides will be hoping to be sitting in the top six.
