Stan Collymore calls for action on Twitter with Aston Villa reportedly facing financial ruin

Stan Collymore is looking to spearhead action that could save Aston Villa from financial meltdown.

Former player Collymore is still a huge Villa fan and took to Twitter after a report laid bare the financial ruin that the midlands giants are facing.

The Mirror claims that Tony Xia has been bankrolling a £5-6million deficit every month and that he’s now run into cashflow problems getting money out of China.

Collymore took to Twitter and revealed that he had been told the real state of Villa, and that it was potentially more serious than Leeds or Portsmouth at their worst.

He said the club had just two choices – to sell and hope, or take action.

He followed this up with another tweet which said Villa were losing £5m a month and that their overdraft had been withdrawn.

Collymore also said that the next parachute payment had already been borrowed against.

Football Insider verdict:

Collymore is liked and loathed by football fans in equal measure, but one thing’s for sure, he loves football and he loves Villa. His solution is to get people round a table who could help and see if they can dig Villa out of trouble. And it seems obvious now without a shadow of a doubt that Villa are in huge, potentially club-threatening trouble. If Collymore’s claim is true, and Villa have already borrowed against a parachute payment (the last one that they’re due) then they could be in really dire straits. The most pressing concern is the tax bill that needs to be paid to avoid a winding up order. After that it’s a long-term solution to a problem that seems like it’s been getting out of control for way too long. After the excitement of the Championship play-offs, and the ultimate heartache, this is proof that there are much bigger battles to fight for the Villa faithful.
