Noel Whelan believes Tottenham Hotspur are getting a steal if they can complete the £16m signing of Matt Doherty.
Speaking exclusively to Football Insider assistant editor Russell Edge, the former Leeds forward claimed Doherty, 28, is “probably one of the best” wing backs in the Premier League.
Football Insider revealed that the Republic of Ireland international had flown back from a holiday in Italy to complete a medical at Tottenham.
This site also revealed that Tottenham will pay an initial fee of just £12m that could rise to £16m with add-ons.
The move could allow Serge Aurier to complete a move to AC Milan who had an opening bid for the Frenchman rejected, according to Sky Sports.
Asked by Football Insider whether £16m for Doherty represents a steal for Spurs, Whelan said: “It is when you look at what (Ainsley) Maintland-Niles is going for.
“They’ve got nowhere near the same amount of experience and he’s not done nowhere near as much in the game then Doherty.
“When you look at it like that you’re getting a great deal for a player who is at the top of his game.
“He knows how to play that role and he’s probably one of the best at it in the Premier League.
“He’s come through a fantastic system at Wolves with some great players.”
If Doherty completes a move to north London it will end his decade long association with Wolves who he joined as an 18-year-old from Irish side Bohemians.
The right back has played 302 games for the Midlands club and has helped them win promotion from both League One and the Championship.
In other Tottenham news, a never before seen forward has been tipped to make a big impact next season.
