Stefan Borson drops update on West Ham transfer plans after £24m reveal

West Ham picked up an unexpected away win at Arsenal on Saturday (22 February) but are still struggling at the wrong end of the Premier League table.

Graham Potter’s side sit 16th in the top flight with the Englishman struggling to right the ship after Julen Lopetegui’s departure in January.

Football Insider revealed on 14 February that West Ham are set to be more than £24million down on their anticipated Premier League prize money for this season.

They earned around £37.2million in Premier League prize money for finishing ninth in 2023-24 as each position is worth approximately £3.1million – but are on course to bank just £15.5million for this term.

West Ham can still spend big – despite dismal 2024-25 season

West Ham also spent heavily last summer (2024) to back former boss Lopetegui, spending around £135million on the likes of Niclas Fullkrug, Max Kilman and Crysencio Summerville.

Nevertheless, former Man City financial adviser Stefan Borson exclusively told Football Insider that West Ham still have a lot of capacity to spend under the Premier League’s Profit and Sustainability Rules (PSR).

He insisted the Irons’ transfer budget will be a decision for the club’s ownership, but conceded they will be “under pressure” to spend again from supporters.

Borson told Football Insider: “They’ve still got a lot of PSR capacity on the back of the Declan Rice sale.

“That’s not a problem for West Ham.

“It’s just a question of how much the owners want to invest.

“West Ham are a club who find it hard to get out of the middle ground in the Premier League.

“When you’ve got 60,000 fans coming in every week, you’re going to be under pressure to spend money.

“The problem they’ve got is they are not particularly profitable, before player sales.

“And player sales are not the way people want to see profit being made, because it has an impact on the pitch.”
