Stefan Borson suggests Rangers ‘priority’ after confirmed Ibrox news

Rangers are now embarking on a new era after their highly anticipated takeover has been completed at Ibrox.

The Scottish giants announced on 30 May the US consortium has now completed its takeover after receiving the approval of the Scottish FA.

It has also been confirmed they have committed to invest an initial £20million into the club.

The ownership group is spearheaded by health insurance tycoon Andrew Cavenagh and Leeds United chairman Paraag Marathe, who is the president of 49ers Enterprises – the investment arm of NFL franchise the San Francisco 49ers.

Finance expert Stefan Borson exclusively told Football Insider the focus for the new owners will be on agreeing deals for a better quality of player to get into the Champions League.

Rangers failed to win a trophy in the latest campaign as they finished 17 points behind Old Firm rivals Celtic in the Scottish Premiership table, ensuring they will enter the Champions League in the second qualifying round.

Russell Martin has been appointed as the Glasgow side’s new head coach as he looks to improve matters on the pitch at Ibrox.

Rangers could land £50m windfall

Borson revealed Rangers could earn up to £50million if they qualify for the Champions League.

He told Football Insider“Footballers are going to be the priority.

“We know there’s now a big opportunity if Rangers can get themselves into the Champions League on a regular basis, instead of or as well as Celtic. The prize there is very substantial, and that’s just got to be their focus now.

“I mean, £20million doesn’t sound like enough, but it doesn’t need to be that much money to compete better at the top of the table. So, spend more money on players and wages, and take it from there.

“We have to remember, we’re now in a world where almost the minimum revenue from the Champions League, if you’re in the group stages, is £40-50million. That never used to be the case.

“Just two years ago, Newcastle when they went out in the group stage, they did about just under £30million, plus the match day revenue because they only had three home games.

“Now, you’re going to have five home games if you’re half decent. So, if you can finish in that top 24, you’ve got five big home games, and you’ve got prize money of around about £40-50million, so it’s massive money.

“The Champions League is where the action is, and that’s what the focus has got to be, can they find better players.”
