Stefan Borson: This is how much Everton may have paid Leeds after settlement agreed

Leeds United previously threatened legal action against Everton following their profit and sustainability (PSR) breaches.

Leeds were one of five clubs to apply for compensation alongside BurnleyLeicester CitySouthampton and Nottingham Forest after Everton were charged with a PSR breach for 2021-22 and 2022-23.

The Athletic reported on 23 September Leeds and Everton reached an out-of-court settlement earlier this year.

Although the financial package remains undisclosed, the news outlet revealed Elland Road chiefs didn’t believe their case against the Toffees was strong enough to go to court.

Former Man City financial adviser Stefan Borson exclusively told Football Insider Leeds could have missed out on up to £2million as a result of Everton’s breach.

Everton likely agreed seven-figure Leeds compensation

Meanwhile, Burnley are suing Everton for £50m after the case began earlier this month at the International Dispute Resolution Centre in London.

The Clarets are claiming they missed out on extra revenue following their relegation from the Premier League in 2021-22 – one of the seasons where Everton were found to have breached the PSR rules.

Speaking exclusively to Football Insider about Leeds’ settlement with Everton, Borson said: “Well, it wasn’t a massive surprise.

“I did speculate in March when we first found out that Burnley were suing Everton about what might have happened to the other teams, and the one thing that was absolutely clear that they had some kind of claim was Leeds, probably only a claim for one place in the league.

“That would have been worth £2-2.5m. I think they’ll have just taken a discount for the question as to whether they’d win the case. I don’t know, 40-45 per cent, and probably settled for about £1-1.5m, something like that.

“It’s not worth the battle. It’s a very manageable amount for Everton to pay. It goes away, takes out the risk, takes out the distraction, takes out the legal fees, and everyone moves on. I think it’s something like that.”

Everton were docked a total of eight points in the 2023-24 campaign following their spending breaches, with top-flight clubs only permitted to make £105m of losses over a rolling three-year period.

Everton could pay Burnley £10m compensation

Borson previously told Football Insider Burnley have a case against Everton due to a “loss of chance” following their relegation from the top flight.

Everton could be forced to pay Burnley up to £10m in compensation if the Clarets are successful in their ongoing legal battle.

Borson said: “The Burnley one is more interesting as a case.

“It’s a more complicated case and the price is bigger for Burnley.”

Burnley are currently third-bottom in the Premier League after being promoted alongside Leeds last season, while Daniel Farke‘s side sit 11th in the table.

Everton are 12th in the top flight under David Moyes, with a clash against his former side West Ham coming up on Monday night.
