Bruce tips Aston Villa academy sensation for regular first-team role
By Dominic Toner
Aston Villa manager Steve Bruce has admitted he has been very impressed by youngster Andre Green and claims he has “grasped the situation” when given a first-team opportunity.
The Villa boss believes the 18-year-old winger has made a positive impact since his promotion from the Under-23s this season.
The academy sensation has been given the opportunity to impress due to a number of injuries in the squad and is certainly making a name for himself among fans.
Green started his second consecutive match on Wednesday night in the Championship victory over Bristol City, but was unfortunately substituted off with a suspected hamstring niggle.
The Midlands giants recorded a 2-0 home victory and moved up to 15th in the league table.
Bruce has hinted that Green can become a regular in the first-team set-up after performing well when given the opportunity.
“He’s hit the bar, he’s hit the post, and he’s had two wonderful chances,” Bruce told BBC West Midlands Sport. “What’s refreshing about him is he has got that natural pace and he’s got a real good chance.
“Fair play to him, he’s grasped the situation and looks a very decent young player at the moment.”
Green is a highly rated left winger that has managed to bring great energy to the side, something that has been lucking during a disappointing season.
The England Under-19 international has made a smooth transition up to the senior squad and will now be aiming to maintain his spot in the side, if he is not restricted by a potential injury setback.
He has developed through the club’s academy and that has made him an instant favourite with supporters.
Green is still searching for his first senior goal and went close by hitting the woodwork against Bristol City, but it shouldn’t be too long before he ends that drought.
