Steve Cooper-Leicester sack latest: ‘Owners will press the panic button’
Steve Cooper faces mounting pressure on his job at Leicester and the board could “press the panic button” if they face a growing threat of relegation.
Speaking on the latest edition of Football Insider’s Inside Track podcast, former England and Leeds goalkeeper Paul Robinson, who remains well-connected within the game, explained that the boss will not be judged based on results against Man United and Chelsea.
Leicester’s next two games come against two of the Premier League’s top sides amid growing pressure on the boss, but Robinson has insisted he will simply be judged based on the threat of relegation.
However, sources have previously told Football Insider that the boss was a last-minute Jordan Ayew equaliser away from facing the sack after he was saved from defeat at Ipswich.
Many behind the scenes at the club are said to be growing impatient and will demand to see significant improvements in the coming weeks.
Despite that growing pressure, the clashes with United and Chelsea will not be viewed as season-defining, but if their prospects of survival begin to look bleak, a change will be made.
Steve Cooper sack update emerges at Leicester City
Now, Robinson has echoed those claims, as he insisted that the boss’ job is simply to keep his side clear of the bottom three and ensure Premier League safety come the end of the season.
“They’ve got to be realistic with where they are and what their aims are,” he told Football Insider.
“It should be to stay in the Premier League since they’ve only just been promoted.
“Any Premier League manager is a couple of bad results away from the sack.
“There’s a section of Leicester supporters who are going to be hard for Cooper to win over because of his connection to Nottingham Forest.
“That’s an issue because as soon as results go against them, it’s a stick to beat him with.
“The biggest thing for Leicester is to ensure they stay in the Premier League.
“Games against Man United and Chelsea won’t be season-defining for Steve Cooper or for Leicester.
“If the board decide the manager’s future based on those two games, it would be unusual.
“His future will be decided over an extended period of time.
“I’d be surprised if they sack based on results in those two games, but if they get some points out of them, things can change quickly.

“I think, like many other teams towards the bottom of the league, the owners will press the panic button when it looks like safety is becoming difficult. That’s when the manager will be changed.
“They’ve just got to make sure they’re better than three other teams this season.”
