Steven Bergwijn exit could pave way for marquee Tottenham signing - Hutton

Alan Hutton has claimed Steven Bergwijn’s exit could pave the way for a forward such as Richarlison to join Tottenham.

Speaking exclusively to Football Insider, the ex-Spurs player said that Richarlison could be a good replacement for the Dutch international.

This site revealed on Tuesday that Tottenham are in advanced talks with Ajax over a deal for Bergwijn.

Bergwijn already has experience with Ajax having joined the club’s youth academy in 2005, where he stayed for six years before joining PSV Eindhoven.

When asked by Football Insider‘s Charlotte Cohen if the move would be good for Bergwijn, Hutton said: “Yes.

For him to move back to his home country, back to Ajax where he knows how everything works, he plays for the national team, it could be a good opportunity for him.

I do feel for Bergwijn because he came in, he was playing under the likes of Mourinho and playing out of position.

He was more or less playing as a kind of right back and left back at times and filling in and stuff so he wasn’t really allowed to flourish forward and get up the pitch.

“And it’s not really worked since then, even though I do believe he’s a good player.

“So to get the money in, it could free up space for the likes of Richarlison.”

The winger joined the north London side in 2020 from PSV Eindhoven and has made 83 appearances for the club, scoring eight goals and providing ten assists.

Bergwijn had a decent start to his career at Tottenham, scoring on his debut against Manchester City.

He went on to score three times in 16 appearances in his first season with the club.

In other news, Tottenham have been backed to sanction an exit for Pape Matar Sarr.
