Steven Gerrard could repeat Philippe Coutinho trick at Aston Villa after source's £11m transfer reveal - Whelan
Noel Whelan has tipped Steven Gerrard to “get the best” out of Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain again if he seals an Aston Villa move this summer.
The former Leeds striker, speaking exclusively to Football Insider, claimed Philippe Coutinho, 29, is a “prime example” of a player who has seen his career revived by the former Liverpool captain.
An Aston Villa source has told Football Insider that Gerrard is a huge admirer of Oxlade-Chamberlain, 28, and has made him a top priority in the remainder of the window.
It is understood that the midfielder’s contract position means he will cost around half of the £22million asking price clubs were quoted last year.
Oxlade-Chamberlain, who has amassed 35 England caps to date, is currently out of contract at the end of the 2022-23 campaign.
Whelan suggested the former Arsenal man will have “a lot of respect and admiration” for Liverpool legend Gerrard.

“Gerrard has got that trust in him from working around him and alongside him,” he told Football Insider‘s Ewan Kingsbury.
“He knows his character, knows his game. For a player, when you have a manager like Gerrard – there’ll be a lot of respect and admiration.
“He’s going back to players he knows and trusts. Gerrard believes he can get the best out of him again. You’ve only got to look to Philippe Coutinho as a prime example of that.
“It could be the same for Oxlade-Chamberlain.”
Oxlade-Chamberlain started just 18 games for Liverpool during the 2021-22 campaign.
Aston Villa have been active so far in this summer’s transfer market.
They have completed deals for Robin Olsen, Boubacar Kamara, Philippe Coutinho, and Diego Carlos.
