Steven Gerrard 'is being backed by Aston Villa board' after source's bid reveal - expert

Steven Gerrard still has the full backing of the Aston Villa board after an update on Kalvin Phillips’ future.

That’s according to former Villains and Scotland boss Alex McLeish, speaking exclusively to Football Insider about his former side’s summer business.

As revealed by this site on 21 June, Aston Villa have submitted bids for Leeds star Phillips this summer though the midfielder has his heart set on joining Man City and has made that clear behind the scenes to all parties.

The Villains have had a busy start to the summer, signing Philippe Coutinho, Diego Carlos and Boubacar Kamara.

McLeish insists that the bid for Phillips shows how Gerrard will continue to be backed this summer.

“I think we all know Phillips is going to sign for Man City,” McLeish told Football Insider correspondent Ben Wild

“But if that is true, that they [Aston Villa] did put an offer in for him, then it just shows how the board are continuing to back Gerrard this summer.

“We know about the club’s ambition. How much of a chance they had of actually signing him, we don’t know.

“But putting the offer in is a statement of intent and it has to be taken as another sign that Gerrard is being backed.”

Aston Villa finished 14th in the 2021-22 Premier League after only winning two of their last 11 league games.

Dean Smith was replaced by Gerrard in November after an underwhelming start to the campaign.
