Steven Gerrard Rangers return: Fans react to ‘genuinely incredible’ speculation

Rangers fans have reacted on social media to reports that former manager Steven Gerrard is set to leave Al-Ettifaq, with many linking him to a potential return to the club.

Philippe Clement’s side came from a goal down to secure a 3-1 victory over Dundee United on 26 January, extending their unbeaten run to seven matches in the Scottish Premiership.

Clement’s team is in strong form, having recently weathered earlier pressure on his job following some poor results.

However, news emerged that Gerrard, the club’s former title-winning manager, is set to leave his role in Saudi Arabia with a “mutual agreement” reportedly on the horizon [Fabrizio Romano on X].

This news has sparked some suggestions of a possible return for Gerrard, but the majority of Rangers fans are against the idea, expressing support for Clement and his current project.

Rangers fans back Clement despite Gerrard speculation

Rangers fans have shown renewed support for Clement despite some linking the club with a potential return for former manager Gerrard.

It appears that the tide has turned in favour of Clement following a string of good results and performances. Earlier in the season, there were calls for his departure, as the club trail Celtic by 10 points in the league.

However, as speculation grew over Gerrard’s availability, many fans have rejected the idea of his return, despite his previous success in securing the 55th Scottish league title in 2021.

While the title was a memorable achievement, some fans are likely to remain frustrated with the way Gerrard left the club for Aston Villa.

The former Liverpool man was sacked after just 11 months, with Villa reaching new heights since appointing Unai Emery.

One fan reacted to the Gerrard speculation with “never again” while others showed their backing for Clement, with one saying, “Give Clement time” acknowledging that while Gerrard had three years at the helm, the Belgian coach is still early in his tenure.

Despite the title win fans are not overly enamoured with his entire reign, with one suggesting the “revisionism” of that era within the fanbase was “genuinely incredible”.

The Gers are set to face Union Saint-Gilloise on 30 January in the Europa League, a match that could decide whether they finish in a play-off spot or secure automatic qualification by finishing in the top 24 rankings.
