Steven Gerrard sends message to ex-Rangers star after devastating injury blow

Steven Gerrard has sent a message via social media to former Rangers defender Borna Barisic following the confirmation of his crushing injury news.

The Croatian international left Ibrox on a free transfer last summer, joining Trabzonspor, where he played just 15 times before being sent on loan to La Liga side Leganes.

Barisic, who made 236 appearances for the Light Blues, sustained an injury just 10 minutes into his debut in Spain and has now written an emotional message to his supporters.

Taking to Instagram [20 February], Barisic wrote: “There is no room for softness, no place for weakness. Thank you everyone for your messages it means a lot at this moment. See you soon.”

His comments have been flooded with messages, with former Ibrox boss Gerrard simply replying with two love hearts, while Ianis Hagi wrote: “Best of luck in your recovery,” with a praying hands emoji.

James Tavernier, also linked with a Rangers exit, replied: “Brate,” with a flexed muscle and love heart emoji.

Steven Gerrard could return to Rangers

Football Insider verdict

Gerrard is still clearly connected to Rangers despite leaving in November 2021 for the manager role at Aston Villa.

His career has somewhat tumbled downhill since that moment, spending just 11 months at Villa Park before being replaced by Unai Emery, who has breathed life into the Premier League club.

However, having just parted ways with Saudi Pro League side Al-Ettifaq, the Liverpool legend’s name has cropped up at Ibrox, especially as pressure grows on Philippe Clement at Rangers.

The Gers continue to fall further and further behind Celtic on and off the pitch, and with supporters desperate for a change in manager, Patrick Stewart could turn to a familiar figure.

That is unlikely to go down well with the Ibrox support, but with the San Francisco 49ers closing in on a Rangers takeover deal, it could be a fresh start for all involved.

There is no telling what changes could be made, from the pitch to the very top, but it is an exciting time for the loyal supporters, nonetheless.
