Steven Gerrard to Rangers hit by setback as board ‘impressed’ by rival

Rangers’ search for a manager to replace the sacked Russell Martin has taken a new twist as Steven Gerrard’s chances of taking over suffer a setback.

Russell Martin‘s short spell as Rangers head-coach ended last weekend as a 1-1 draw to Falkirk was the final straw for the club’s fans and hierarchy.

The search was immediately underway for his successor and a number of names have been publicly linked with the job over the last week, with Football Insider revealing on Monday (6 October) that Steven Gerrard would jump at the chance to return to Rangers.

Rangers have entered talks with Gerrard as he aims to return to the Ibrox dugout after four years away, but he is not guaranteed the job just yet as they continue to sound out other candidates.

Fans will want a new appointment made as soon as possible with a massive task at hand to get the Gers firing again on all fronts, and some new details have now emerged about another potential new boss who could soon be handed the reins.

Rangers chiefs wowed by Danny Rohl as he competes with Gerrard

Former Sheffield Wednesday boss Danny Rohl was a candidate to take the Rangers job back in May, but the 49ers chose Martin and must now be regretting their decision.

Football Insider revealed on Monday (6 October) that Rohl is open to becoming the Rangers boss now, five months on, as he seeks a new challenge following his Hillsborough exit.

He has been eyed by the Ibrox chiefs once more, and Sky Sports have now revealed that Rohl has “impressed” the likes of Andrew Cavenagh, Paraag Marathe and Kevin Thelwell as they search for Martin’s successor.

The German boss fully remains in the race for the job, despite the noise around a potential return for Gerrard, and Rangers are yet to offer the job to anyone after some reports stated the contrary.

Djeidi Gassama to benefit if Rohl arrives at Rangers

Rohl proved to be an inspired appointment by Sheffield Wednesday in October 2023, as he led them from almost-certain relegation to Championship safety and then built on his success as they finished in 12th place last season.

His future at Hillsborough came into question towards the end of the previous campaign, however, with Owls owner Dejphon Chansiri’s financial issues causing numerous members of staff to work unpaid and the club placed under transfer embargo by the EFL.

Rohl officially left Wednesday at the end of July after he missed the first two weeks of pre-season training amid exit talks, but he is yet to enter a new role after being linked to both the Brentford and Leicester City jobs before those vacancies were filled.

Djeidi Gassama moved to Rangers from the South Yorkshire outfit over the summer, and he has started well north of the border despite their struggles as a team with five goals to his name so far this term.

He was championed by Rohl during their time together at Wednesday as he called Gassama “fantastic” and saw him as a key player throughout his tenure, and that would surely be no different if the German boss was to make the move to Ibrox soon.
