'Stupidity' - Chris Sutton blasts Rangers and Celtic fans after chaotic January
BT Sport pundit Chris Sutton has blasted Rangers and Celtic fans for constantly talking down the value of players on the opposite side of the Old Firm divide.
The Gers were widely reported to have turned down late January bids for Alfredo Morelos while the Hoops have seen speculation drive fierce about Moussa Dembele’s future at Parkhead.
Both sets of Glasgow clubs’ fans have taken shots at one another for the money that their star strikers are worth and Sutton has called on a truce to be called for the sake of Scottish football.
“There are times I read things online and it leaves me absolutely stunned at the levels of stupidity,” he said on the Daily Record website.
“Celtic and Rangers fans go at it constantly but I can’t for the life of me understand why both sets of fans seem to be determined to talk down the value of their rival players.
“We’re talking about Moussa Dembele and Alfredo Morelos here. Both are in demand and have attracted talk of big money bids.
“But it you listened to fans of either side of the divide you’d think the pair of them were worth about two bob between then.”
He added: “It’s just as well the clubs don’t pay any attention to the keyboard warriors because they both are bang on to demand top money for their main men.”
Sky Sports reported on transfer deadline day that Beijing Rehne had a bid worth £8million rejected by Rangers for Morelos.
It was understood that the Chinese Super League club also had an offer of £7million kicked into touch by a stubborn Gers, who clearly had no plans to sell their top goalscorer before the deadline on Wednesday night.
The Independent reported in December that Celtic had rubbished reports that an £18million bid had been accepted from Brighton for Dembele.
The France Under-21 international has seen his future come under the spotlight in what was a chaotic January, especially as Brendan Rodgers continued to keep naming him on the bench.
In other Rangers news, the Light Blues have been tipped by the bookies to sign this former Celtic forward who is now a free agent.
