Super-quick Middleton backed to 'wow' Gerrard in pre-season and rocket up Rangers pecking order - pundit

Alan Hutton has insisted Glenn Middleton could rocket up the Rangers pecking order with a dazzling pre-season.

The former Gers defender, speaking exclusively to Football Insider, suggested the 21-year-old’s pace could offer Steven Gerrard “something different”.

Speaking to the Daily Record, Middleton admitted he wanted to force his way into the first-team reckoning in pre-season.

The young winger spent the second half of the 2020/21 campaign on loan at St Johnstone.

Hutton admitted Gerrard already has plenty of options to call upon in Middleton’s position.

However, he insisted a good pre-season could see the starlet make waves among the squad.

“I think he offers something different with his pace. It’s all about how he comes back,” Hutton told Football Insider’s Russell Edge.

“I think he offers something different with his pace.

“First impressions are huge. If he comes back and he’s fit, he’s hungry, doing all the pre-season running and has kept himself fit over the summer, these are the things that catch the eye.

“As a manager, you’re sitting there saying: ‘Wow, look at Glenn Middleton. He’s come back in shape, he’s ready to go.’ That puts you ahead of some people. That’s sometimes what you need.

“Steven Gerrard has a lot of options in that attacking third. He’ll probably still be looking that are more options and are attacking thoughts, and he probably still be looking at additions at the moment.

“It’s all down to Glenn Middleton to change his mind and say: ‘I’m here, I’m raring to go and willing to fight.'”

Middleton has played 29 times for Rangers to date, with five goals and five assists to his name.

His last Gers appearance came as a substitute against Falkirk in November 2020.
