Danny Mills has insisted West Ham United striker Michail Antonio is “fully deserving” of a new contract.

Speaking exclusively to Football Insider correspondent Connor Whitley, the former England and Manchester City full-back delivered his verdict after the Hammers announced he had extended his east London stay until at least 2023.

This site revealed on Saturday the 30-year-old is set to net £9million across his two-and-a-half year deal with the club retaining an option to extend it for another season.

Antonio’s new agreement is on similar terms to his previous £70,000-a-week deal and could keep him at the London Stadium past his 34th birthday.

The Englishman moved to West Ham from Nottingham Forest in 2015 as a right-winger.

However, since David Moyes’ return to the club last year the Scotsman has used him in a central role to great success.

Antonio has scored eight goals in his last 11 Premier League appearances, including four goals against Norwich City at the back end of last season.

And Mills has claimed his newfound success is simply down to old-fashioned hard work.

“He’s been superb,” Mills told Football Insider.

“It’s a great advert for all players to say ‘look, you get your rewards for working hard.’

“No player gets to Premier League level without ability but you get rewarded if you work hard. If you put the effort in people recognise that.

“Sometimes people call it old school values, it’s just values and that’s how it should be.

“He’s fully deserving of that.”

Antonio has scored 39 goals and provided 20 assists in 140 Premier League games for the Hammers.

He is now just four goals behind Paolo Di Canio who is the Irons’ record Premier League goalscorer.
