Chris Sutton has expressed his relief after Tom Rogic agreed a new long-term deal with Celtic.
The Australian midfielder, who man thought could depart the Hoops in the summer, signed a five-year deal which was announced on the Hoops official Twitter account.
We are delighted to announce the Wizard of Oz, Tom Rogic, has signed a new five-year contract, keeping him with #CelticFC until 2023. 🧙🇦🇺

Sutton, writing in his column in the Daily Record, feared that the prospect of the Hoops potentially losing the likes of Rogic and Moussa Dembele in the summer would have ‘an almighty blow’, which is why he is so delighted that one of the key men in the Hoops squad has committed his future to the club.
“I’ve been critical of Celtic’s recruitment in the last couple of windows and it’s an area of the club that’s going to be absolutely crucial this summer going in to the Champions League qualifiers.” he said.
“But keeping hold of the top talent is every bit as important. We don’t know what will happen with Moussa Dembele this summer, Patrick Roberts will return down south and Stuart Armstrong could go.
“Rogic leaving as well would have been an almighty blow. The fact he’s staying is a major bonus and it’s shrewd business having another key player on a long-term deal.”
Rogic, who scored the winner in last season’s Scottish Cup Final v Aberdeen, is set to be a big player for the Hoops in Saturday’s Scottish Cup Final v Motherwell, where the Hoops will look to win the treble for the second year in a row.
Football Insider verdict
It is no surprise that Hoops fans were delighted to see Rogic sign his new deal, as it did look at one stage that the prospect of him staying at the club long-term was quite remote. But credit must be given to Brendan Rodgers and the Hoops board who have managed to persuade the player to commit his future to the Hoops. Rogic’s skills are second to none in Scottish football, and he would have been extremely difficult to replace in the Hoops squad, as his ability to find space and play in the vital ball is unmatched in the current Hoops squad. Rogic has the happy knack of scoring vital goals, and after the winner in last year’s Scottish Cup Final and four goals against Rangers this season it wouldn’t be much of a surprise to see the player seal his new contract in style by finding the back of the next in the Scottish Cup Final v Motherwell.
