Tariq Lamptey sends ‘big’ message after Brighton beat Newcastle, Lewis Dunk reacts
Tariq Lamptey saw red in Brighton’s FA Cup clash against Newcastle, but it didn’t stop his side from reaching the quarter-finals.
Brighton secured a dramatic 2-1 victory at St James’ Park after extra time, with Danny Welbeck’s late strike sealing the win in a tense encounter.
Newcastle had taken the lead through Alexander Isak, who returned from injury to find the net, but former Magpies player Yankuba Minteh hit back with an equaliser.
The match was filled with controversy, as Anthony Gordon was sent off for violent conduct following a deliberate push.
Ex-PGMOL chief Keith Hackett told Football Insider that Gordon left referee Anthony Taylor with no choice. The decision means Gordon will now miss Newcastle’s upcoming Carabao Cup final.
Lamptey also saw red after receiving a second yellow for a late challenge on Jacob Murphy, leaving Brighton to finish the game with ten men.
Carlos Baleba was lucky to avoid a red card according to Hackett, but despite the drama, the Seagulls side held firm to book their place in the next round.
Lewis Dunk and Carlos Baleba react to Tariq Lamptey’s message to Brighton fans
Lamptey took to Instagram after Brighton’s FA Cup victory and his red card, sharing a message with supporters: “Big performance, thanks for the support. Get back safe everyone. Thank God Always.”
Teammates Lewis Dunk, Baleba, and Joao Pedro were among those who acknowledged the post by liking it.
The full-back has struggled for consistent game time this season, starting just nine Premier League matches. However, he has enjoyed a run in the team this calendar year, making seven consecutive starts across all competitions.
Lamptey previously came under criticism from Brighton fans after their 7-0 defeat to Nottingham Forest on 1 February, where he conceded a penalty and was branded “unacceptable.” Despite that, Fabian Hurzeler has continued to show faith in him in recent fixtures.

Fabian Hurzeler needs to maintain form amid early pressure
Since taking over from Roberto De Zerbi last summer, Hurzeler’s tenure at Brighton has been inconsistent.
Brighton fans called for Hurzeler’s sacking earlier in the season, but a recent upturn in form has seen the side win five consecutive games in all competitions.
Now, the focus will be on maintaining momentum, with a European push looking increasingly possible as the Seagulls sit eighth in the Premier League.
