'Terrible... Shocking' - Exclusive: Whelan rips into Leeds player after display

Noel Whelan was bitterly disappointed by Patrick Bamford’s performance as Leeds United lost 4-1 to Leicester City last night.

The former Whites and Coventry forward, speaking exclusively to Football Insider correspondent Dylan Childs, despaired over the 27-year-old’s “terrible touch” and finishing under the lights at Elland Road.

Bamford squandered a number of opportunities as Marcelo Bielsa’s side missed the chance to jump back into the top half of the Premier League table.

The English striker has enjoyed a fine start to the 2020/21 campaign with his seven league appearances yielding six goals and two assists.

Leeds were without club-record signing Rodrigo for Monday night’s game, the Spain international self-isolating after coming into close contact with a person who has tested positive for Covid-19.

When asked by Football Insider for his assessment of Bamford’s performance against the Foxes, Whelan said: “Bamford has to be better than that.

“He had two great chances. The header has to hit the back of the net.

“The one passing move that Leeds produced, when we broke through the back line his touch was shocking. A terrible touch. If he gets his touch right the probably scores. The touch gave Kasper Schmeichel the opportunity to smother him.

“You have to take those opportunities when they come your way. They are the sort of goals that can change the direction of a game.

“He should have been in confident form after the hat-trick at Aston Villa.

“The goal would have forced Leicester to be more expansive. He was off the mark last night.”
