'That would kill him' - Exclusive: Bent reacts as PL giants plot big-money Everton raid

Darren Bent has tipped Everton defender Mason Holgate to turn down a move to Manchester City and continue his career at Goodison Park.

The former Tottenham and England striker, speaking exclusively to Football Insider assistant editor Russell Edge, believes the centre-back would be best remaining somewhere he is going to get regular first-team football under his belt.

As revealed by Football Insider, City are readying to swoop for the 23-year-old this summer as they seek defensive reinforcements for next season.

Football Insider pundit Michael Brown has suggested that it will be impossible for the Toffees’ defender, who was valued at £40million pre-lockdown, to turn the Premier League giants down.

However, Bent believes that the guarantee of first-team action could sway Holgate into remaining at Goodison Park for another season at least.

“If he’s going to go to Manchester City and play, then fantastic, that would be a great move,” Bent told Football Insider.

“But if you’re talking about going there and being a bit-part player, I think that would kill him and his development. For me, they need a centre-half, I like Mason Holgate, I always have done, I’ve always rated him so if he can get himself there and playing, I’m all for it.

“I think he’s going to learn – listen, Guardiola’s a great coach but while he’s at Everton he’s going to be improving all the time. I’d be liable for him to stay where he’s at and go: ‘Not quite yet,’ but there is going to be a time where he’s going to get the opportunity to go to a big club because I believe he will do.

“For now, keep plying and learning your trade at Everton.”

Holgate has played 30 times for Everton across all competitions this season, having established himself as a mainstay at the back under Carlo Ancelotti.

He has been partnered alongside the likes of Michael Keane and Yerry Mina at the heart of the defence.
