'Their players will shake' - Aldridge delivers verdict on Liverpool v Manchester City
Liverpool legend John Aldridge believes there is one way the Reds can get one up on Manchester City ahead of the two sides’ clash in the Champions League next month.
It’s a much-anticipated affair and a lot is expected from the two teams in terms of an attacking spectacle, but while the ex-forward can’t pick a winner, he believes the atmosphere that the Liverpool faithful can generate at Anfield can spur his old side on.
As quoted in the Daily Mail, Aldridge stated the hostility the Reds supporters will show their opponents will make City players literally “shake” and said: “Possibly, it’s an advantage for them having the second leg at home but then again their ground doesn’t generate an atmosphere.
“We have to make the first leg count. I’ve been lucky enough to experience some very special European nights at Anfield over the years where the place is rocking and we have to add Man City to the list.
“Some of their players will shake when they feel the atmosphere we create. They won’t have heard anything quite like it.”
Football Insider verdict:
There’s not much to separate the two sides in terms of attacking ability – both are potent going forward so it’s going to be a match full of goals. With a 5-0 defeat of Klopp’s side earlier in the season, City would be slight favourites but that was against a Liverpool side who were down to ten men. The Reds overturned that result in January with a 4-3 win. There can be no doubting that the atmosphere at the Etihad is tepid at best so Aldridge is right – it will be a baptism of fire for the Sky Blues. But Pep Guardiola’s side are an experienced bunch and it’s doubtful as to whether or not that it will have much of a say in the outcome of the tie.
