Noel Whelan claims that “a lot of bigger clubs” will be banging on the door for Rangers manager Steven Gerrard after Birmingham City’s approach.
The former Leeds and Aberdeen striker, speaking exclusively to Football Insider assistant editor Russell Edge, suggests that the Liverpool legend will want to win at least one bit of silverware before he considers leaving Ibrox.
As revealed by Football Insider on Thursday, Birmingham made an approach to appoint Gerrard as their new manager following the imminent departure of Pep Clotet.
However, this site has since detailed that Gerrard rebuffed the Blues’ efforts to take him from Glasgow, with his sights set on winning a trophy with the Scottish giants.
Whelan admits it is no surprise he turned down the Championship outfit and believes there will be much bigger sides sniffing around the Gers boss.
Whelan told Football Insider: “No disrespect to Birmingham but they’ve been financially struggling for a number of seasons now. Firstly, I very much doubt they can afford his wages and afford him at the football club.
“Stevie is assembling a very strong side up at Glasgow Rangers and his job is not finished there, he wants to win things and he won’t be satisfied until he does. He’s won or challenged for something most seasons he was at Liverpool.
“This is his first managerial job, he’s not going to want to leave Rangers without winning one trophy, minimum, and European football as well. Everything lies in Rangers’ favour rather than Birmingham. I’m sure that bigger clubs that would give the opportunity, if he was available, and want him at their club as well.
“Look at Frank Lampard, I think time is the best thing for Stevie – have another season at Rangers, win some trophies, challenge for the title and I’m sure there will be a lot of bigger clubs banging on the door after him.”
Rangers finished the 2019/20 Premiership season 13 points off fierce rivals Celtic, with the campaign cut short amid the Coronavirus pandemic.
They were also beaten in the Scottish League Cup final by the Bhoys.
