Wigan Athletic youngster Sean McGurk is exactly the type of player that Leeds United want to sign, according to Noel Whelan.
Speaking exclusively to Football Insider correspondent Dylan Childs, the former Leeds forward and boyhood Whites fan delivered his verdict after it was reported that the club are set to swoop for the 17-year-old.
The Sun report that the Yorkshire giants will launch a second bid for the midfielder after they saw a potential deal in the summer rejected by Latics administrators.
Leeds added McGurk’s former Wigan teammate Joe Gelhardt, 18, in the transfer window as well as six other under-23 players.
The academy at the club was upgraded to category one during the summer meaning they now compete in Premier League 2 and the EFL Trophy.
And Whelan has been left extremely impressed by the investment.
He told Football Insider: “At the minute the academy is looking really good. Category one gives us the option to go and buy players and play other sides in the category as well.
“This is what we need. Everything is being put in place at the football club with the younger generation and we’re spending a bit of money in that area.
“We’re still keeping the local lads coming through but sometimes you’ve got to dip into the market and that will make them better players, playing with better young talent as well.
“The club and the Under-23s are looking really healthy plus you’ve got the added bonus of young lads playing with some of the professionals like they did the other day (against Norwich).
“That’s got to be a great experience for them in itself.
“It looks really rosy at the minute and I’m sure we’ll be going in for more younger talent because that is the future of our club.”
