‘This is the end of the season…’ – Exclusive: Whelan delivers Leeds verdict on leaked letter

Noel Whelan has claimed Leeds United can go straight into next season without a break if fixtures are not resumed until June or July.

The former Elland Road striker, speaking exclusively to Football Insider correspondent Dylan Childs, suggested the players should regard this as the summer break despite not being able to go on holiday.

As revealed by Football Insider, the Whites are eagerly anticipating the conclusions of a video conference between Premier League clubs, as well as the EFL and FA, to discuss the latest proposals for this campaign.

A leaked letter from UEFA is urging European leagues not to cancel their seasons, and complete current campaigns in July or August.

Whelan believed a July restart need not push back the start of the 2020/21 season.

“No player is going to be up to speed when it comes to match football,” he told Football Insider.

“They will have a mini pre-season and have to hit the ground running. There will be a two to three week period of friendly games and games against the 23s. It is a case of getting back, playing Saturday, Tuesday, Saturday and you can have the season finished off in 3 weeks.

“They get paid a lot of money and right now this is the end of the season break. There is no reason they cannot finish this season and then bang on with the next.

“They are getting a longer break now than when the season is finished. Yes, they are not sitting on a beach but they are not like other people having to lose their jobs or forfeit their business.”

United are one of the clubs that stand to lose the most from a potential voided season.

Marcelo Bielsa’s side are in pole position to return to the Premier League for the first time since 2004.

In other Leeds United news, Kevin Phillips has told Football Insider if Ben White stays Spanish colossus will be brought in to partner him.
