Thomas Tuchel ‘at risk’ at Chelsea as sack news emerges – pundit

Chelsea boss Thomas Tuchel may be “at risk” if he cannot get results under the club’s new ownership, according to Noel Whelan.

The former Leeds striker, speaking exclusively to Football Insider, suggested the sacking of Mauricio Pochettino could heap increased pressure on the 48-year-old.

According to The Telegraph (12 June), Pochettino is set to be sacked by Paris Saint-Germain – and it is claimed that the former Tottenham coach will target a return to the Premier League.

Tuchel led his Chelsea side to a third-place finish in the top flight in 2021-22 but failed to mount a meaningful defence in the Champions League.

The Blues are subject to new ownership after American businessman Todd Boehly tied up a £4.25billion purchase of the club.

Whelan suggested Tuchel will have to earn the right to stay at the helm of the Stamford Bridge club.

“The new owners will give Tuchel a chance,” he told Football Insider‘s Ewan Kingsbury.

“It’s a chance that he deserves. It hasn’t been an easy ride for him in the last year after everything with Abramovich and the sanctions.

“They won’t be too hasty in an ideal world – but you never know with new owners.

“Look at Newcastle with Steve Bruce, they were always looking to replace him. When new owners come in, there is that doubt that there could be change on the cards.

“Especially when there is someone available with the qualities and the experience of Pochettino.

“It’s like a player. Everyone is at risk in football.

No one is ever safe at football clubs, and Tuchel will have to earn the right to stay under these new owners.”
