Three managers Rangers must consider to replace Russell Martin include former Everton boss

Russell Martin’s dismal start as Rangers boss continued to get worse as his side lost in their opening Europa League game against Genk.

Rangers lost 1-0 to Genk, after a goal from former Celtic striker Oh Hyeon-Gyu following Mohammed Diomande’s first-half red card.

Martin was criticised in the defeat to Genk for some of his decision-making following the red card to Diomande, and Rangers inevitably slipped to another defeat.

Sean Dyche

Former Everton and Burnley manager Sean Dyche has been sounded out by many as a leading candidate to take on the role if Martin is sacked.

Dyche knows Rangers’ sporting director, Kevin Thelwell, from their time at Everton, and that familiarity could help to smooth out the transition between Martin and the 54-year-old.

Rangers lack defensive organisation and robustness, something that would come in spades under the leadership of Dyche.

Currently lying 11th in the Scottish Premiership table, it’s imperative that Rangers make a big move in the manager market, and Dyche could provide that cultural reset.

Danny Rohl

Rangers were widely linked to former Sheffield Wednesday boss Danny Rohl in the summer before Martin took over.

Following the 49ers Enterprises’ purchase of the Ibrox club, Rohl’s odds tumbled as his Wednesday tenure neared an end.

Rohl is currently out of employment following his departure from the Yorkshire club, and Rangers could swoop to sign the German early in the season.

The 36-year-old caught the eye with his attractive brand of football at Wednesday and would bring back some enjoyment in the way Rangers play if he were to get the job.

Steven Gerrard

Steven Gerrard was reportedly favoured by 49ers Enterprises following their takeover of Rangers in the early summer.

Due to contractual reasons, the former Liverpool man couldn’t make a return to Rangers, where he won the Scottish Premiership in 2021.

With Gerrard’s career heading south and Rangers’ fortunes falling in the same direction, since the pair split in November 2021, this could be the perfect juncture for the two parties to reconvene.

Gerrard knows the league and the club, and is a favourite with the Ibrox faithful, so there’s no doubt his reappointment would lift the dismal mood around the club.
