Liverpool should try to beat Tottenham to the signing of Burnley’s powerhouse striker Andre Gray this summer.
Gray, 25, has netted eight goals in 27 Premier League games this term and has also provided two assists.
Here are three reasons why Liverpool should move quickly to hijack the reported bid.
Guaranteed game time
If Gray were to make the move to White Hart Lane he would immediately be behind Harry Kane in the running to be their number one striker. Unless Kane suffers an injury early on, it is almost certain that the 25-year-old would spend a lot of time at the start of the season on the bench. At Liverpool this would not happen – as there is not as much competition for the striker role. This could be a key bargaining chip for Jurgen Klopp if he were to open talks.
Sturridge is on his way out
Although nothing is confirmed yet, after another injury-blighted season it looks as though Sturridge will be leaving Anfield this summer. That potentially leaves open the door for Gray to make the striker role in Klopp’s side his own. Liverpool have been crying out for an out-and-out front man since Luis Suarez left, and Sturridge has never really hit the heights he did in 2013/14 when he banged in 22 Premier League goals. Gray has all the attributes to provide that option.
The price is right
Gray is entering the final year of his contract at Burnley so they may be open to a cut-price deal to get him off their books before he could potentially leave on a free next season. Picking up these kinds of bargains is crucial to any side’s success, but none more so than Liverpool who have wasted vast sums on average players in recent years. Also, if they can secure his services on the cheap, it will leave open the funds to further strengthen the squad.
In other Liverpool news, the Reds are set to let this Klopp favourite leave this summer.
