23-year-old has work cut out: Three things we learned about Liverpool in draw against Man United

COMMENT By Harvey Byrne

Football Insider analyses three talking points from Liverpool’s 1-1 draw against Manchester United in the Premier League on Sunday afternoon.

Karius has work cut out

Loris Karius made the switch to Liverpool in the summer, expecting to claim the club’s number shirt from the error-prone Simon Mignolet. However, the 23-year-old shot-stopper also made a string of high profile mistakes in his first appearances for the club, meaning Mignolet was handed a return to the side. The Belgian has seemingly took his opportunity with both hands and looks a different player now. Mignolet ensured his side conceded just one at Old Trafford and took away a point on Sunday with some stunning saves. Karius did play well against Southampton in midweek in the 1-0 defeat, but he now has his work cut out if he is to become the club’s number one again.

Klavan not good enough

Ragnar Klavan was another summer addition for the Liverpool team. He was also brought in to help solidify a troublesome area of the pitch in the defence. However, the Estonia international always looks prone to a mistake and he was at fault for the Southampton goal in midweek, while allowing Ander Herrera through on goal after failing to track his goal on Sunday. He was saved by goalkeeper Mignolet on Sunday, but it has become clear that Liverpool need to get him out of the team as soon as possible to avoid anymore defensive lapses. He is a clear step down from Joel Matip and the Reds must ensure they get the Cameroon international’s situation sorted soon.

Alexander-Arnold is a talent

Trent Alexander-Arnold was handed a start against Manchester United at Old Trafford on Sunday. It is an occasion which would see many youngsters crack. However, the 18-year-old match both Antohny Martial and Juan Mata across the 90 minutes and gave a very strong showing for the Reds on Sunday. The player was caught out at times by United, but that is expected and he will only get better in the team.
