Midfielder must be sold in January – Three things learned about Newcastle from defeat v Burnley

Defence is no substitute for offence

Monday’s fixture will no doubt go down as one to be avoided for the neutrals.

It was a fixture lacking in attacking threat, as both Sean Dyche and Rafa Benitez set their sides up to frustrate the oppositions’ forward line.

The plan worked – for 73 minutes at least – but it never looked like Newcastle were ever going to get more than one point for fighting out a 0-0 draw.

The Magpies are well known for just how resolute at the back but as proven at Turf Moor, it is no substitute for scoring goals, something they have found difficult to pull off at times.

They need to start learning how to score from open play too, as set pieces have been crucial this season.
