This starter under pressure: Three things we learned from Newcastle United win over Stoke

COMMENT by Russell Edge

Newcastle United continued their fine form in the Premier League with a 2-1 victory over Stoke City at St James’ Park on Saturday afternoon.

Goals from Christian Atsu and Jamaal Lascelles gave the Magpies their third straight win, launching them up the table to finish the day in fourth place, level on points with reigning champions Chelsea on nine.

However, it could, and probably should, have been more for Rafael Benitez’s side, as the Spanish boss saw his players squander several clear cut opportunities to put the match to bed.

Instead the Toon Army were left feeling nervous following Xherdan Shaqiri’s impressive second half equaliser, with Stoke threatening to steal all three points despite Newcastle’s dominance.

However, fresh from scoring the match winner away at Swansea last weekend, club captain Lascelles repeated his heroics in front of the Newcastle faithful, ensuring that the Magpies would finish the weekend no lower than fifth.
