27-year-old should be axed in January: Three things we learned about Newcastle in loss against Sheffield Wednesday

COMMENT By Harvey Byrne

Football Insider analyses three talking points from Newcastle’s 1-0 defeat against Sheffield Wednesday in the Championship on Monday night.

Vurnon Anita should be axed in January

The 27-year-old’s contract is set to expire in the summer and he has so far proven that he is not good enough for a new deal. The Holland international has been converted into a right-back from the defensive midfield position in recent seasons. However, he is not good enough for a team of Newcastle’s aspirations to be playing in the full-back position. Therefore, to avoid losing a player they once signed for £6.7million for free, they should get rid in January.

Jonjo Shelvey is a massive miss

The midfielder received a five-match suspension in the week after being found guilty of a racial slur against a Wolves midfielder in a clash between the two teams. The 24-year-old has proven this season he is a class above the Championship with a return of seven assists and three goals from 26 encounters this campaign. He was clearly missing from the Newcastle team on Boxing Day, who created chances, but lacked Shelvey’s killer class against Sheffield Wednesday.

Teams will do anything to stop Newcastle

The Magpies dominance over the rest of the Championship clearly hasn’t gone unnoticed as they sit at the top of the league at the halfway point However, a good team in Sheffield Wednesday, who are sat in sixth were more interested in stopping Newcastle with a series of fouls than playing themselves. The Yorkshire side picked up six bookings across the 90 minutes and it has become clear that opposition sides in England’s second tier would do anything to prevent Newcastle from earning all three points in the future.

In other Newcastle news, Benitez has shared his plans for January.
