27-year-old must be axed: Three things we learned about Sheffield Wednesday in defeat v Brentford

COMMENT By Harvey Byrne

Football Insider analyses three talking points from Sheffield Wednesday’s 2-1 defeat against Brentford in the Championship on Tuesday evening.

Lees is needed

Star centre-back Tom Lees has not featured for Sheffield Wednesday since a 2-2 draw against Bristol City at the end of January due to an injury. The 26-year-old has missed his side’s last five games and despite the Yorkshire club picking up four victories the midweek has showed that Lees is needed in Carlos Carvalhal’s team. The defender has featured in 27 of Wednesday’s Championship matches this campaign and he has often worn the captains armband. Fans will now be hoping that he is back to face former club Leeds on Saturday with neither Vincent Sasso or Glenn Loovens convincing in his absence.

Bannan must be axed rather than shoehorned on the left

Barry Bannan is a steady player to have in the centre of the park, but with more of a license to attack on the left he is extremely poor. It was clear on Tuesday evening that it was an unnatural position for the 27-year-old as he failed to work anything with the ball and failed to get the better of Brentford right-back Maxime Colin. It was clear why Carvalhal started Almen Abdi and Sam Hutchinson in the centre of the park against the Bees, but rather than shoehorning Bannan out on the left he must be axed to the bench.

McManaman needs more pitch time

Sheffield Wednesday’s best chances of the game came when Callum McManaman came onto the pitch after 66 minutes. The 25-year-old right-winger has the pace and trickery to cause problems to the best of defences in the Championship. However, with just one start since making the loan move from Premier League West Brom in the winter he has so far struggled to show his quality in the Wednesday team. It is clear from Tuesday evening that the former England Under-20 international needs more time out on the pitch and he should start against Leeds.
