No place for 22-year-old: Three things we learned about Tottenham in win v West Brom

COMMENT By Harvey Byrne

Football Insider analyses three talking points from Tottenham’s 4-0 win against West Brom in the Premier League on Saturday.

Formation change has made Tottenham the best

Manager Mauricio Pochettino decided to switch from his 4-2-3-1 formation to a 3-4-2-1 for the clash against Chelsea earlier in the month and he hasn’t looked back. Tottenham 2-0 winners over the league leaders, ending their 13-match winning strike, while also beating Aston Villa in the FA Cup with a number of changes. Spurs on Saturday absolutely dominated West Brom and it was only because of Ben Foster that the scoreline wasn’t more. Tony Pulis’ side are no pushovers and before the game they were sat in eighth with just 24 goals conceded from their 20 matches. It is now hard to think of a better team than Tottenham in the Premier League in their current form.

Eriksen is now flourishing

Christian Eriksen was one of the Tottenham attackers to come under a lot of criticism earlier in the campaign. However, the new formation has seemingly brought a new player in Eriksen to the club. The Denmark international produced two pieces of magic for the two opening goals and he always seemed to be in the right positions in the final third against Pulis’ side. He is currently looking like one of the best attacking midfielders in England he will be keen to continue with his impressive form.

No place for Janssen

Striker Vincent Janssen was axed from the 18-man matchday squad to face West Brom and there doesn’t look like there’s a place for him in the team. The 22-year-old attacker has struggled to establish himself after signing from AZ Alkmaar in a £17million move in the summer and has seemingly fallen out of the squad after a poor performance against Aston Villa in the FA Cup in his last outing. With just three penalty strikes in his 23 appearances for the club, his value is expected to plummet. Tottenham have shown all season and especially on Saturday that they wouldn’t miss the Holland international and the club must now cut their ties with the player before his value drops further.

In other Tottenham news, Rafael van der Vaart issued his support for this Spurs star ahead of the game.
