Football Insider analyses the three talking points as Aston Villa secure a 2-0 win against Rotherham in the Championship on Saturday afternoon.

Amavi needs to start on the left-hand side

The injury to Andre Green prior to the Rotherham game was very unfortunate because the youngster was beginning to show his talent and filling a difficult role in the team. In recent months no-one has stepped up and made the left side of attack their own but with the injury to Green, left-back Jordan Amavi should be given that chance. Birkir Bjarnason started the game against Rotherham on the left, looked lively and went off injured. His replacement, Jack Grealish was also forced off. That only leaves a handful of players that can fill that role and with Amavi’s attacking threat, the 22-year-old should be given a go.

Injuries piling up

Prior to the game, players who were in the treatment room were Scott Hogan, Andre Green, Gabby Agbonlahor, Rushian Hepburn-Murphy, Gary Gardner, Ritchie de Laet with Bjarnason and Grealish now joining them. With a tough run of fixtures coming up, that list growing does now help Steve Bruce in his plans. As a result, Bruce should give the academy players the chance to shine because Green proved that when given a little run in the starting XI, he can begin to show his true colours.

Confidence now building

Three wins, three clean sheets and it is now looking very bright for Bruce. Prior to those wins, Villa had suffered five defeats on the bounce but they are now climbing up the table and need to build this momentum for next season. The Midlands giants are not getting relegated, nor finishing in the top six. Therefore, using the next few months as a mini pre-season could prove to be crucial next term.
