Dependable 24-year-old disappoints: Three worst Chelsea players in Man City win
COMMENT By Matt Bullin
Football Insider takes a look at Chelsea’s three worst players after their 2-1 victory over Manchester City at Stamford Bridge on Wednesday night.
The 22-year-old defender returned to Chelsea’s starting line-up to start a Premier League match for the first time in 14 months but he only lasted until half time. The Frenchman was switched out for Nemanja Matic at half time in a tactical switch as Antonio Conte looked to bolster his midfield. But by no means did Zouma impress during his cameo – he should have been marking Aguero when the Argentine scored City’s goal and he looked nervous throughout. Harsh of Conte to throw him in against Aguero, Leroy Sane and David Silva after such a long spell out.
Chelsea’s 24-year-old stopper is usually reliable but he made a crucial error to allow City the opportunity to score. His poor clearance was picked up by David Silva, and although he saved Silva’s inital effort, he palmed it straight to the awaiting Aguero who slotted home. His error did not end up costing Chelsea and he made some decent saves later in the game but he now has not kept a clean sheet in eight Premier League games – with his last one coming in the Blues 2-0 win over Hull in January.

Costa is without a goal in his last three Premier League appearances now and his performance against City fell well short of what Antonio Conte has come to expect. Costa’s work rate and tenacity was apparent though his game lacked quality both on and off the ball. When in possession he struggled to create anything or bring his teammates into the game, and although his movement off the ball was good he failed to link up with Eden Hazard or Kevin De Bruyne. Conte will be hoping his big man re-discovers his form in the run up to the end of the season.
