Times: Premier League rivals make enquiry for £49k-a-week Tottenham first teamer
By Aramide Oladipo
Chelsea have approached league rivals Tottenham about defender Toby Alderweireld this summer, according to a report.
The Times claims that the 28-year-old is considering a move away from North London as he is unhappy with his current financial situation at the club.
The newspaper reports that sources close to the Belgian confirmed that negotiations concerning a new deal at the club have failed to progress with Spurs chairman Daniel Levy unwilling to increase the player’s salary.
The report claims that the central defender is currently earning £49,000-a-week and Levy is refusing to offer him a weekly wage of £80,000.
It is said that Alderweireld could double his salary with a move to the Premier League champions this summer.

Rivals Manchester City are also keen on landing the defender but Levy is reportedly not willing to sanction a move that sees him join a Premier League club.
The Times reports that Italian giants Inter Milan have also shown an interest in the Belgium international.
Alderweireld has been an essential member of the Spurs first-team since securing a permanent move two years ago.
The Belgian’s performances have helped Spurs boast the best defensive record in the Premier League for the last two seasons in a row.
The defender’s contract with the North London club runs out in 2020.
Football Insider verdict
With all the money in the game right now, this was always going to be an issue for Tottenham. There is a real possibility that Spurs might struggle to keep hold of their top players if they fail to offer them big money and it appears that it’s become a big enough issue for Alderweireld to consider his future at the club. They simply cannot afford to see him leave the club especially to join a direct league rival. Alderweireld is a key reason why they have been able to challenge for the league title over the last two years however, with central defender Sanchez securing a move to North London, it is plausible that Spurs might be willing to listen to Chelsea should they table an enormous offer.
